In both the best and worst of economic times, worker productivity is a major management goal. Making sure that employees efficiently carry out their tasks is critical to the success of both government and business enterprises. First, of course, the workers have to show up. Keeping track of employee attendance is no small task, but far too often it is conducted by somewhat primitive manual procedures that are inefficient themselves. As a result, the incidence of workers cheating on their hours is still a major issue for employers.

Should a Small Business Watch the Clock?

Many small businesses fail to fully utilize automated time-reporting tools or shy away from them altogether. However, once a business starts to reach about 30 staff members, time reporting helps them understand costs, improve efficiency, and focus on the right areas, said Journyx CEO Curt Finch. It helps them track how much is spent on each customer and decide which ones are more profitable. “People aren’t intuitive about numbers sometimes,” Finch said.

Time tracking can help show companies where they are making money and allow them to eliminate poor customers.

Workday: The Next Software Power?

Ever since veteran software entrepreneur Dave Duffield launched his new startup, Workday, a year and a half ago, people have wondered if it could become the next Salesforce.com. Marc Benioff, Salesforce.com’s chief executive, had shaken up the customer relationship management software world and created a company with a market cap of $8 billion with an online service that replaces expensive and complex traditional software packages. Could Duffield and Workday do the same? Just now, there’s growing evidence they can.
