Will Microsoft Get Search Branding Right With ‘Kumo’?

Tuesday, November 25th, 2008

Is Microsoft about to rebrand Live Search as “Kumo”? News reports on Monday had the software giant buying up domain names such as “Kumo.com,” “Kumo.net,” “Kumo.jp” and the like from CSC Corporate Domains, a domain registrar with which Microsoft often does business. There are two prevailing schools of thought regarding “Kumo” — Japanese for “cloud” and “spider” — at the moment. One, Microsoft wants to rebrand its search engine. Two, Microsoft will use “Kumo” to brand its new cloud computing products.

Amazon’s Cloud Services Move Out of Beta’s Shadow

Friday, October 24th, 2008

Amazon announced Thursday general availability of its Elastic Compute Cloud, part of the Internet retailer’s Web service offerings. Launched in beta 26 months ago, the service provides a resizable compute capacity to businesses with varying server needs. “The appealing thing about EC2 is that instead of buying a server, you pay for it by the hour. That’s great if your need for servers goes up and down or is temporary. If you’re going to run servers steady all year, it is less appealing to have a different way of paying for it,” said Frank Gillett, a Forrester Research analyst.

RealDVD Works Great - If You Can Get It

Tuesday, October 7th, 2008

RealNetworks released its controversial RealDVD movie ripping application last week but within days removed the program from its Web site due to a legal feud with the Motion Picture Association of America. RealNetworks provided TechNewsWorld with a final prelease version of the RealDVD software last week in consideration of a new product review. The app lets you save a copy of a DVD to your PC’s hard drive. It only works with a DVD, not content saved to a DVR or other digital media devices.
