An Android Advance, a Patent Punch and More Tablet Temblors

Talk that Apple is inching ever closer to making its rumored tablet computer a reality is making the rounds. In fact, Cupertino could sell more than 2 million tablets in 2010, according to the expectations of analyst Brian Marshall. Meanwhile, Apple should continue to gain strength in other areas with the new iMacs it introduced last week and the strength of its iTunes App Store, which now carries more than 100,000 apps. Though it remains on a general upward trend since the summer, Apple’s stock has cooled down a bit from the heights it hit last week.

The Google Voice Choice: Keep Your Number or Get More Features

Google announced on Monday that Google Voice users can retain their existing mobile phone numbers when setting up an account instead of having to receive a new phone number for the service. “Google Voice is all about enabling choice,” product manager Pierre Lebeau said in a post on the Google Voice blog. However, that choice is restricted — consumers who decide to use their own mobile phone numbers with Google Voice will miss out on several features, including call screening and blocking, as well as conference calling.

Google Investors Cheer Search Ad Market Reports

Google’s stock snapped out of its recent funk Tuesday after new data showed the Internet search leader is becoming even more dominant in the most lucrative part of the online advertising market. Internet research firms comScore and Nielsen Online both said the volume of search requests at Google has climbed substantially over the past year while rivals Yahoo and Microsoft are losing market share. The statistics, based on October search activity, bode well for Google’s fourth-quarter revenue.
