Good news for the economy: Small business outsourcing has gone mainstream thanks to the increased use of automation technology — computers, software and the Internet powering cost-efficient outside service provider teams. Bad news for outsourcing service providers: Small and mid-sized businesses are proving to be slow on the uptake. The basic premise of business process outsourcing is that companies focus on their core competency and move their non-core business processes to outsourced services providers, thus allowing for optimal use of a company’s time and resources.

Internet phone company Vonage has secured $220.3 million in credit in a deal that Wall Street sees as crucial to the struggling company’s survival. Proceeds will go toward paying off $253 million in debt on Vonage’s books. The $220 million deal, led by Silver Point Finance, comes at a time of unprecedented turmoil on Wall Street and the tightest credit markets in decades. Silver Point primarily invests in companies under some sort of financial duress.

Yes, I am an angry guy. I yell at other drivers. I roll my eyes when I have to stand in line for more than two minutes. I complain about Wall Street’s greedy executives, out-of-touch politicians, and our local newscast idiots, with their pancake makeup, chiseled cheekbones, and chirpy laughter. Stuff that doesn’t work — especially business technology — is at the top of the list of things that make me angry. Computer equipment and software were the sixth most-complained-about category at the Federal Trade Commission in 2007.

Anyone who’s going to work at Apple has to come to terms with the fact that the company is generally very secretive about anything having to do with new products. Apple staffers who create the company’s latest stuff are used to keeping their lips sealed tight. But then Apple tried to restrict third-party iPhone software developers by requiring them to sign off on a very strict nondisclosure agreement. What couldn’t developers do? Well, they couldn’t talk to anyone about anything having to do with their projects — not even if their projects were rejected by Apple.

Companies hoping to dial up international business with China may have yet another reason to think twice about privacy concerns, following new revelations that the Communist country has been spying on Skype-based phone calls and text messages. Citizen Lab, a University of Toronto-based security and human rights research group, partnered with several other international agencies to release a report this week detailing flaws within TOM-Skype, the Chinese version of the popular Internet protocol communications company.
