Search and databases often have troubled relationships. Web-based search utilities have become essential business tools. The database is the lifeblood of many a business’ record-keeping system. Both are vital — just don’t try to put the two together or integrate spreadsheets and other documents with them. For example, searching just doesn’t exist with Oracle or Microsoft Access. Users with technical skills can build a structured query, but these products do not have the sort of simple search features found at Google’s or Yahoo’s home pages, for instance.

One called “ZeeVee,” an Internet TV technology firm, launched a limited beta for its Zviewer Monday. The open platform is a free downloadable application that provides a one-stop destination for some of the top video content sites on the Web.

The risk of business is just to cop up with changing trends and the current trend is spending money online. RealNetworks released its controversial RealDVD movie ripping application last week but within days removed the program from its Web site due to a legal feud with the Motion Picture Association of America. RealNetworks provided TechNewsWorld with a final prelease version of the RealDVD software last week in consideration of a new product review. The app lets you save a copy of a DVD to your PC’s hard drive. It only works with a DVD, not content saved to a DVR or other digital media devices.

Google and Yahoo are so well established in my daily Internet search routine that I wasn’t expecting to find anything new with a beta engine from a start-up search company. But ubExact had more than one pleasant surprise in how it lets users search. ubExact launched its beta on Sept. 2 after spending much of its first year designing the search platform and loading a database of information and vendor links keyed to Metro Service Areas around the nation. That process will continue for some time until the end of phase one.
