“Lessons Learned” is a series where we ask ecommerce business owners to share their experiences and advice. For this installment, we interviewed Jamee Simons, co-owner of Enstrom Candies Inc., a Colorado-based candy company. The family-owned business produces Enstrom’s World Famous Almond Toffee and dozens of other hand-made confections.
Simons’ grandfather opened the first Enstrom Candies shop in 1960 in Grand Junction, Colo. In 1979, Jamee and her husband Doug began working for the company, and the couple eventually bought the business in 1993.
Today, Enstrom Candies has six physical stores across Colorado, and a successful online store. The company’s annual revenue is roughly $13 million, with online sales making up 30 percent of…

Yahoo! Inc. reported third quarter earnings yesterday that beat Wall Street expectations but didn’t put to rest lingering questions about the health of the display advertising market, which generates a large portion of Yahoo!’s revenue.

Yahoo! reported revenue of roughly $1.5 billion for the quarter-end Sept. 30 and net income for that quarter of roughly $186 million. This included a one-time profit of roughly $98 million from the sale of Yahoo!’s investment in Alibaba, the Chinese web portal. Total quarter-end revenues and profits were down from the same quarter in 2008, but expected by observers due to Yahoo!’s reliance on branded display advertising, which has been soft during the current recession. Our “SEO Report Card” for this month is Moodswingsonthenet.com. The CEO of Moodswings, Elizabeth Bighorse, requested this review, and she told us that the company has just finished a re-launch of its “multiple sales channel” site. Moodswings focuses on urban, rockabilly, tattoo and alternative styles and seeks to expand its market of trendy clothing, gifts and accessories. Bighorse says they are currently half way through a search-engine-optimization initiative, but she could have fooled me! With that, let’s take it away.

The U.S. Federal Trade Commission has updated its rules concerning endorsements and testimonials in advertising. Beginning December 1st, the FTC will require bloggers and other reviewers to disclose any payments or free products they receive from advertisers. Julie O’Neill, with the Washington, D.C. office of the law firm Morrison & Foerster, tells us ways in which ecommerce merchants can adapt to the new regulations.
