Can developing free software for mobile phones be a business? It can if you’re Illusion Labs, a fledgling company in the Swedish port city of Malm. Illusion Labs was started a year ago by Carl Loodberg and Andreas Alptun, who had worked together at another Swedish company called “TAT,” designing software for companies including Samsung and Nvidia. They set up their own company so they could concentrate on developing applications specifically for Apple’s iPhone.

I recently worked with a client who runs a relatively small e-commerce operation as a second business.
He lamented the fact that when he provided a phone number on his website, his sales more than doubled but the time required to run the business also more than doubled because of all the phone calls, which was not viable for him.

As someone who is familiar with the coverage that surrounds the iPhone, I was puzzled by Tuesday’s announcement from AT&T about a new way to buy the gadget. My first reaction: Something must be missing. Second reaction: Why would anyone pay more for the iPhone if there’s no additional benefit? AT&T said it will sell an 8 gigabyte iPhone for $599 and the 16 GB version for $699. Both are offered contract-free, meaning it sells without the usual two-year service agreement. It could be worth the cost if you dislike AT&T’s service and wanted to use the phone on another carrier. But you can’t.
