Friday, April 3rd, 2009

Shares of BlackBerry maker Research In Motion soared more than 20 percent in after-hours trading Thursday after the company said its profit jumped in its fiscal fourth quarter, surpassing analysts’ expectations. Solid demand for smartphones, despite the recession, helped boost results. The company said it earned $518.3 million, or 90 cents per share, for the quarter ended Feb. 28. That was up 26 percent from the year-earlier period. Analysts polled by Thomson Reuters had expected a profit of 84 cents per share.

High School Journalism and the Decline of Newspapers

Friday, March 13th, 2009

Josiah Jones is the editor-in-chief of an award-winning magazine, guiding a staff of 90 that also produces podcasts and a Web site. It’s heady stuff for an 18-year-old senior at Lee’s Summit High School near Kansas City, Mo. After he graduates, Jones plans to pursue a journalism career, completely undeterred by the forces buffeting the profession. Newspapers are cutting back or closing and thousands of reporters have lost their jobs. Media advocates worry that those factors are reaching into high school, leaving print publications especially vulnerable.

Monday, March 9th, 2009

The chief executive of semiconductor maker Texas Instruments received compensation valued at $9.6 million in 2008, down 6.6 percent from the previous year as the company faced fierce competition for chips that power cell phones, according to a regulatory filing. Much of the compensation for Richard K. Templeton came in stock options that currently have little value. Templeton’s salary was $960,780, up 3 percent from 2007 to reflect an expected increase for CEOs at other companies, TI said. His performance-related bonus dropped to $1.6 million from $2.4 million.

Saturday, January 31st, 2009

Apple may have just thrown a big bucket of cold water all over the Palm Pre love fest, courtesy of the U.S. Patent Office. The company has officially secured the rights to the technology behind the distinctive multifunction touchscreen found on the iPhone and the iPod touch — it’s what gives you the ability to pinch and spread your fingers to zoom in and out of a photo or a Web page. The patent also covers certain aspects of the iPhone’s hardware, the OS and the camera functions.

IBM Mum on Reported Layoffs

Tuesday, January 27th, 2009

Just a week after beating Wall Street expectations with a sterling earnings report, IBM is rumored to be laying off between 1,400 and 2,800 employees. If true, IBM would be the latest on a long list of technology companies that have shed jobs in the past few weeks. Last week, Microsoft announced it would lay off 5,000 employees while Intel said it would lay off as many as 6,000 employees. Aerospace giant Boeing also expects to reduce its workforce by 4,500 employees.
