Nokia Chases BlackBerry Market With IBM Lotus Notes Deal

Thursday, November 20th, 2008

Nokia and IBM are teaming up to bring corporate e-mail, calendar, address book and messaging functions to mobile workers. Nokia’s move is its latest attempt to compete with Research In Motion, maker of the BlackBerry e-mail device. The Finland-based phonemaker signed a similar deal with Microsoft in September. The deal with Big Blue will let Nokia smartphone owners access IBM Lotus Notes e-mail starting next month.
Nokia has more than 40 different smartphone models that can use the new Lotus Notes service.

Consumer Spending Slowdown Dulls Nokia Outlook

Friday, November 14th, 2008

Nokia, the world’s largest cell phone maker, on Friday downgraded its outlook for industry-wide mobile device volumes for the fourth quarter, citing pressure from the economic crisis and currency volatility. It also announced it planned further cost cuts in 2009 “to respond appropriately to the market conditions,” but said it would provide more details on Dec. 4 when it hosts its capital markets day in New York. The Finnish company warned in a statement that the rapid changes in consumer spending are likely to hit the mobile device market.

Cell Phone Sales Slide in Q3

Thursday, October 30th, 2008

The usual pre-holiday ramp-up in cell phone shipments didn’t happen this year because of the feeble global economy, a research firm said Thursday. Manufacturers shipped 299 million phones in the July-September period, down 0.4 percent from the second quarter, according to IDC. The third quarter normally sees a rise in shipments, as stores stock up ahead of the holidays. Shipments still grew 3.2 percent compared to last year. But as cell phones have become a global must-have in the last few years, it has been more common to see growth rates of up to 20 percent.

Steve Jobs: Apple Will Be ‘Fine’

Thursday, October 23rd, 2008

Steve Jobs may not be sure how much the economic slump will hurt Apple, but he’s clear on this: It won’t be as bad as pessimists predict. And for the first time in eight years, he got on an analyst conference call to discuss quarterly results to make sure the point wasn’t lost on anyone. “We may get buffeted by the waves a bit, but we’ll be fine,” Jobs said on the call, following the release of Apple’s fiscal fourth-quarter results. Evidence of the buffeting may already be showing up. Apple reported $7.9 billion in sales, below the average estimate of analysts.

Will Opening Code Keep Symbian Out in Front?

Tuesday, October 21st, 2008

Users of the Symbian mobile phone operating system, meeting in London this week, hope that making the software freely available will help it regain momentum in the battle with new rivals like Apple and Google. The two-day conference is the first since Nokia, the world’s largest mobile phone maker, announced in June it would buy out its partners in UK-based Symbian for $410 million and make its software royalty-free to all phone makers. Nokia decided to set up the not-for-profit Symbian Foundation and make the 10-year old operating system open source and free from the first half of 2009.
