Nearly a week after T-Mobile, HTC and Google unveiled the G1, the first handset running the open source Android mobile platform, another handset maker is reportedly preparing a large push to incorporate the nascent mobile software system into its upcoming devices. A report Sunday stated that Motorola is boosting the size of its Android development team from 50 to 350. The information was attributed to an unnamed developer who was approached by a headhunter for one of the positions.

Wireless technology giant Motorola has landed a top Qualcomm executive to run its mobile devices unit, which is expected to be spun out in the second half of 2009. Sanjay Jha, former chief operating officer at San Diego-based Qualcomm, is now co-CEO of Motorola and CEO of the Schaumburg, Ill.-based company’s mobiles device unit. Jha, a wireless industry veteran, comes to Motorola at a time when the company is losing market share to competitors such as Samsung; Research In Motion, maker of the BlackBerry; and Apple, which makes the iPhone.

Motorola performed better than analysts had expected in Q2, delivering net earnings of $4 million on Thursday. Revenue was $8.1 billion, beating expectations by Wall Street analysts of $7.5 billion for the handset manufacturer. Motorola’s Home and Networks Mobility and Enterprise Mobility Solutions segments were among the best performing divisions in the company, according to Greg Brown, president and CEO. They delivered sales of $2.7 billion and $2.0 billion, respectively.

Shares of Motorola tumbled as the company reported a first-quarter loss on Thursday, based largely on lean mobile phone sales and an eroding market share of the competitive sector. Motorola shares have lost more than half their value in the last year. On Thursday, they were trading at $9.23, down 3.35 percent from their previous close on the New York Stock Exchange. The stock dipped to its 52-week low of $8.85 April 15. It peaked for the same period at $19.68 on Oct. 25.
