Greenpeace Drizzles on Apple’s New Green Ad Campaign

Wednesday, November 26th, 2008

The silver Macbook spins slowly in front of an all-white background, as it has in previous Apple television commercials. But this ad’s overall spin is different — instead of talking up digital media, faster processors and more memory, this one mentions toxic chemicals, recyclable aluminum and glass, and energy efficiency. “The new Macbooks. The world’s greenest family of notebooks,” says the voiceover in the commercial, which began running in network prime-time slots this week. Also released this week: the 10th version of Greenpeace’s Guide to Greener Electronics.

Litigants Lob More Lawsuits at Apple

Wednesday, November 26th, 2008

Apple is facing two more legal challenges against the iPhone. Los Angeles-based
EMG Technology filed a suit in the U.S. District Court in Texas claiming that the iPhone infringes on a patent approved last month by the Patent and Trademark Office. The patent is for an “apparatus and method of manipulating a region on a wireless device screen for viewing, zooming and scrolling Internet content.” In another case, an iPhone 3G user is seeking class status to sue for $5 million in restitution from Apple, claiming that the iPhone 3G does not perform as advertised.

iPods, iPhones and the Enterprise Data Clampdown

Monday, November 24th, 2008

It’s a safe bet that most enterprise employees don’t haul their personal laptops into the workplace. However, with the ever-increasing capabilities of iPods and iPhones these days, are workers introducing new issues for IT security? The Apple iPod touch now comes with a whopping 32 GB of storage space and built-in WiFi capable of attaching to nearly ubiquitous corporate wireless networks. The iPhone doesn’t currently have as much storage space, but it too has WiFi. While most organizations should be running relatively secure wireless networks, is there still a security risk?

Goliath Gives David a Pounding as Psystar Antitrust Suit Flops

Wednesday, November 19th, 2008

Psystar’s chief legal defense in its fight with Apple is off the table — for the moment at least. U.S. District Judge William Alsup has dismissed charges that Apple is violating antitrust regulations and creating restraint of trade by linking its operating system with its branded hardware. Psystar is the company that dazzled some Mac fans several months ago — and raised more than a few eyebrows — with the offer of a product called “Open Computer.” Essentially, Open Computer is a cheap Mac clone that runs the Macintosh OS X Leopard operating system.

Apple on Black Friday: Blowout Bonanza or Business as Usual?

Thursday, November 13th, 2008

As the United States gets ready for its upcoming Thanksgiving holiday, retail organizations are gearing up for their annual Black Friday sales. This year, though, they face a difficult economic climate, and many consumers may be especially tight with their cash this time around. Some retailers — especially those that sell consumer electronics — are expected to cut prices even deeper than usual. Apple has not traditionally ignored the Black Friday bonanza completely, though its retail sales are generally more conservative than those of other electronics sellers.
