Networking giant Cisco Systems will shut down most of its American and Canadian offices from Dec. 29 to Jan. 2 in a move the San Jose, Calif.-based company says will save it about $1 billion. Cisco’s announcement is just the latest signal that technology companies are making efforts to cut costs as demand for new computing equipment slows down and a recession looms. EMG Technology filed a suit in the U.S. District Court in Texas claiming that the iPhone infringes on a patent approved last month by the Patent and Trademark Office. The patent is for an “apparatus and method of manipulating a region on a wireless device screen for viewing, zooming and scrolling Internet content.” In another case, an iPhone 3G user is seeking class status to sue for $5 million in restitution from Apple, claiming that the iPhone 3G does not perform as advertised.
