With its $99 price, the new Android-based Motorola Backflip clearly stands apart from Apple’s iPhone on more than just appearance. Both are smartphones, to be sure, and both are offered through AT&T. They also provide many of the same features and functionality. However, in addition to their different form factors and operating systems, the divergent pricing on the devices suggests that they occupy very different positions in AT&T’s strategy.

Jan. 27 will no doubt be a big day for Apple. The company is widely expected to unveil a new tablet computer Wednesday, but that may not be all it will have to talk about. Apple will also announce the end of AT&T’s exclusive hold on the device in the U.S., according to a source cited in a Hot Hardware report. Cupertino may also split carrier rights for its much-anticipated tablet between AT&T and Verizon. That might sound like bad news for AT&T, but the company may be eager to let another wireless company share the burden of carrying the data-hungry device.

And you thought some of the couplings on “Jersey Shore” and “Big Brother” were tough to follow. Technology companies, who do the love-hate-love thing better than any reality show, may be at it again, according to reports that indicate Apple may be ready to make Bing the default search engine on its iPhone, displacing Google. Business Week, quoting two sources familiar with the Apple-Microsoft negotiations, uses the revelations to illustrate the widening gulf between Steve Jobs’ company and Google.

Let’s say you spent the holiday weekend pouting that you didn’t find an iPhone under your Christmas tree in your New York City residence. However, if you then tried to buy the Apple smarthpone yourself through AT&T’s Web site, you might have thought you were permanently on Santa’s “naughty” list. The tech blogosphere was buzzing Sunday with news that AT&T had quietly suspended online sales of iPhones for anyone with a New York City ZIP code. If you plugged in a ZIP from any of the five boroughs into AT&T’s online iPhone store, the sale was denied.

Listen. Wow. If you’re reading this, there’s a decent chance you’ve seen the inundation of whiny news stories and blog posts over the widely reported comments from Ralph de la Vega, president and chief executive for mobility and consumer markets at AT&T, and the admission that AT&T’s data services suck — my word — in New York and San Francisco. Oh, along with that, 3 percent of smartphone users gobble up 40 percent of data bandwidth, and the data hogs are probably going to have to pay.
