Obama Puts Stimulus Funds Toward Digitizing the Power Grid

The Obama administration is giving a jolt to the futuristic “smart” electric grid, hoping to more quickly bring America’s power transmission system into the digital age. President Barack Obama, during a visit to a solar energy facility in Arcadia, Fla., is announcing Tuesday that he is making available $3.4 billion in government support for 100 projects aimed at modernizing the power grid. The projects include installing “smart” electric meters in homes, automating utility substations, and installing thousands of new digital transformers and grid sensors.

Do Charities Get a Decent ROI From Social Networking?

Meredith Bowen was getting tired of requests from Facebook friends to exchange make-believe pansies, daffodils and tiny cartoon characters for her “Lil Green Patch,” a virtual garden that sprouted on her social-networking page about a year ago. She was ready to delete it, until she learned The Nature Conservancy was getting a portion of the ad revenue generated by the game. “I’ve saved like 133 square feet of rainforest,” the 31-year-old Holt resident said. Bowen illustrates both the potential upside and downside for charitable causes hoping to cash in on social networking sites.

Amazon to Save Consumer Fingernails, Tempers With Simpler Wrappings

Consumers will get a break from having to wrestle with tough-to-open parcels this holiday season with the advent of “frustration-free” packaging from Amazon.com. The online retail giant will try to cut down on the sheer volume of packaging materials used to ship purchases from the site. The effort begins with products from 19 manufacturers, including software powerhouse Microsoft, and toymakers Fisher-Price and Mattel. The news will undoubtedly be welcomed by parents ordering some of the more popular toy items this holiday season.
