YouTube, Universal Hook Up for Music Video Site

Google’s YouTube and Universal Music Group are partnering to launch Vevo, a music video vehicle featuring UMG’s videos. The site will launch in the coming months. Few details have been provided about the launch; however, both companies will share in the revenues, and additional deals with other music labels are being negotiated, the companies said. That’s enough, though, for the industry to begin speculating about what this development will mean for the way music videos are viewed online.

Quarter of TV Stations Make Digital Switch Early

About a quarter of the nation’s TV stations cut off their analog signals Tuesday, causing sets to go dark in households that were not prepared for digital television despite two years of warnings about the transition. Though most viewers were ready — and people with cable or satellite service were unaffected — some stations and call centers reported a steady stream of questions from frustrated callers. Many wondered how to get coupons for converter boxes that translate digital signals for older TVs — or how to get the devices working.

Getting IT Architects to Speak Business

The Open Group, a vendor- and technology-neutral consortium, last week delivered TOGAF 9, an enterprise architecture framework. As part of the festive opening ceremony for TOGAF 9’s arrival, a panel of experts examined the value and role of enterprise IT architecture in light of a dynamic business environment. The topics also addressed how IT can better communicate and collaborate with the business interests around them. To gain deeper insights into how IT architects can bring value to businesses, I moderated a discussion at The Open Group’s 21st Enterprise Architecture Practitioners Conference.

Google Abandons Radio Ad Experiment

Google will stop selling ads on broadcast radio stations this spring, marking the Internet search leader’s latest flop in off-line media. The retreat announced Thursday is just the latest example of how the recession has caused even highly profitable companies like Google to reassess their priorities and toss out the deadwood. The impending closure of the radio ad service extends a series of cost-cutting measures that have signaled Google’s management is bracing for leaner times after years of robust revenue growth that enabled the Mountain View, Calif.-based company to spend freely and gamble on new ventures.
