Millions of consumers have switched their bill-paying practices from tedious sessions with a stack of statements and checkbooks to streamlined, paperless payments through a variety of online channels. However, the movement to electronic payments still has a long way to go, and a huge majority of consumers have not yet been weaned away from their checkbook chores and welcomed to the world of paperless payments. As a result, billers, financial institutions, and the IT vendors who provide online payment programs still have many opportunities to profit.

Although the shadow of the recent recession is still lingering over us, many business owners are moving toward starting an e-commerce business, which can seem like a scary leap to take. However, a reason to take that leap is that the number of consumers shopping online is growing. Recent figures from the Department of Commerce show that online stores’ sales were up 12.4 percent in January, compared with a year ago. Data like this show that shoppers are more often turning to e-retailers for their product needs instead of wandering through the mall.

Google Dabbling With TV Set-Top Search

Google and Dish Network reportedly are testing a service that allows television users to search for television programming and Web content from set-top boxes. Google software installed in the boxes allows users to create a personalized programming lineup, anonymous sources told The Wall Street Journal. It’s no secret that Google and Dish have been collaborating since 2007, when the companies entered into a partnership for Google to deliver ads to the satellite network’s audience and develop mechanisms to more accurately measure how they are viewed.

Europe Sets Antitrust Sights on Google Search

The European Commission has notified Google that it received complaints from three companies about its search ranking practices. The companies are a UK price comparison site, Foundem, a French legal search engine, ejustice.fr, and Microsoft’s Ciao! from Bing. Foundem also filed a complaint with the FCC, citing concerns over “search neutrality.” Though each is slightly different, all of the complaints center on how the companies show up in search rankings, Julia Holtz, senior competition counsel, said in a post on Google’s European Public Policy Blog.
