Apple Holds iTunes Hostage Over Royalties

A decision expected on Thursday from a three-person government panel could lead to the closure of Apple’s online music, movie and digital book store, iTunes. Or it could provide what many in the digital media industry have long wanted to see: Apple backing away from the line it drew in the sand on pricing. The Copyright Royalty Board is scheduled to rule on a music royalties increase of nine cents per track. Apple has said that if the cost of its online songs at iTunes were to rise above the 99 cent price point, it would not be able to operate the site profitably.

Congress Stalls on Economy but Moves on Net Radio Royalties

The weekend media spotlight was on the heated Congressional negotiations that produced a financial bailout bill, which promptly went nowhere. But hidden somewhere in the static of dealmaking, rhetoric and counteroffers was a strong signal of support for Internet radio. The Webcaster Settlement Act of 2008 passed the House on Saturday and was scheduled for a vote in the Senate on Monday. Although it doesn’t rank on the priority scale with keeping the U.S. economy from riding off its rails, the bill is the result of similarly tough negotiations.

After all, it doesn’t cost anything to share this material. It’s there for the taking. Besides, what’s the harm, and who cares anyway, right? That thinking represents the attitude of many computer users. Sure, in those long-ago days before the Internet, people made facsimile copies of published material and reproduced them in small quantities to share with associates.
