Is Sprint Looking to Disconnect From Nextel?

Sprint may be a step closer to selling off its Nextel business. Latin American carrier NII holdings has expressed interest in a purchase, according to The Wall Street Journal — which cites “people familiar with the matter” as revealing the news. Several private-equity firms such as Cerberus Capital Management have also come forward as potential buyers, the Journal says. Sprint has struggled with its Nextel operation almost since the start. The carriers merged in 2005, and it didn’t take long for scores of customers to defect from the Nextel service.

HP Pockets LeftHand to Challenge Dell in IP Storage Space

Computing giant HP has announced its intention to acquire storage software company
LeftHand Networks for $360 million in cash. HP’s move is an attempt to shore up its presence in the fast-growing IP storage segment of the data storage market. Unlike traditional storage area networks, IP storage networks allow businesses to increase the amount of data they can store without making massive investments in fiber channel switches.

McAfee Makes Enterprise Bid With $465M Secure Computing Buy

Virus protection giant McAfee is expanding its security empire with the acquisition of Secure Computing. The company announced plans for the purchase Monday morning. It’ll pay $465 million, or $5.75 per share, in the merger. The move will no doubt help expand McAfee’s suite of security-related products as it works to compete with the market’s top provider, Symantec. Secure Computing’s stock jumped close to 25 percent following the news.

Google May Plunge Ahead With Yahoo Deal Sans Gov’t Blessing

Google’s chief executive said Wednesday the Internet search leader won’t delay its proposed advertising partnership with rival Yahoo even if government regulators need more time to assess whether the alliance will diminish competition. After voluntarily delaying the start of the Yahoo deal three months ago to give antitrust regulators time to review the potential impact, CEO Eric Schmidt said he isn’t willing to wait very much beyond an Oct. 11 deadline spelled out in the companies’ contract.

Clamor Against Yahoo-Google Ad Partnership Grows

The din of protest against the proposed Google and Yahoo ad partnership, announced earlier this summer, is getting louder every day. World Association of Newspapers, a Paris-based organization that represents about 18,000 newspapers and 77 newspaper associations around the world, is asking the Antitrust Division of the United States Department of Justice, the European Commission’s Competition Directorate, and the Competition Bureau of Canada to nix the deal.
