Apple may be making a lot of noise lately with its new iPhone 3G, but when it comes to fighting software pirates, Steve Jobs’ company prefers to speak softly and carry a big stick — the stick, of course, being legal action like its recent lawsuit against computer maker Psystar for producing machines that can run Apple software. Cell phone traffickers have created a complex network of individuals and companies in the U.S. and around the world that steal subsidies from wireless companies used to lower the cost of their phones for legitimate customers.

Former Samsung Chairman Lee Kun-hee saw the suspension Wednesday of his prison sentence in a tax-evasion conviction, a move that confirmed South Koreans’ view that tycoons are immune from jail. The Seoul Central District Court convicted Lee for failing to pay tens of millions of dollars in taxes, and imposed a hefty fine of about $109 million against the man who led the country’s most powerful business conglomerate before he resigned in April over the allegations that included a range of fiscal crimes.
