There will be 50 million tablet computers on the market by 2014, according to a new In-Stat report — and if Apple plays its cards right, a significant portion of them could be iPads. In-Stat took several factors into account as it made its calculations, said Jim McGregor, analyst and report author. “Right now, Apple can build these devices for $400 and still make a profit off of them. But the cost will eventually come down — and so will the price for consumers.”

I was a bit distracted from the Apple iPad news due to the marathon Oracle conference last week on its shiny new Sun Microsystems acquisition. As the Apple tablet rumor frenzy blows way past the level of a fever pitch, I’m starting to reconcile myself with the notion that we may — within a few weeks — finally hear from Apple. The company is widely expected to make a public announcement Jan. 27 or so, though again, the expectation isn’t due to Apple, it’s due to a report stating the company has rented a stage at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco. What might Apple announce? A tablet, of course, perhaps an “iPod slate.”
