Chapter 2 in Yahoo’s Summer of Drama

Monday, August 18th, 2008

Yahoo is starting its first full week with an updated board of directors and a fresh outlook for the future. Former Viacom CEO Frank Biondi Jr. and former Nextel CEO John Chapple — both recommended by outspoken shareholder-turned-board-member Carl Icahn — were officially appointed to leadership roles Thursday. Now, the company will try to find the path away from public battles and into success. Icahn, for his part, has yet to reveal a formal plan to turn the company around. He initially promised a “quick sale” to Microsoft, but that notion is looking less and less likely.

What I Did Last Summer: CEO Camp

Sunday, August 17th, 2008

Sure, the kids looked sharp presenting their business plans to the jury of Silicon Valley investors. And yes, the investors looked impressed sitting in the conference room at Microsoft’s Silicon Valley campus. But me? All I could think was: It’s summer. Shouldn’t these middle-schoolers be out bouncing a ball? Or counting the clouds? Or rowing a boat across a lake? I know. One of Yahoo’s largest institutional shareholders — Capital Research Global Investors — triggered the recount.

Alcatel-Lucent Boots Top Brass

Tuesday, July 29th, 2008

Markets responded favorably to Tuesday’s news that the chairman and CEO of Paris-based Alcatel-Lucent would be leaving the merger-troubled company. The telecommunication company’s stock was up nearly 6 percent by market close following the announcement that CEO Serge Tchuruk and CEO Pat Russo will both leave later this year. The company also announced second quarter revenue in line with analyst estimates. The departures are good news for the company, which has not posted favorable financial results since its 2006 merger, said R.W. Baird analyst Ken Muth.
