Yahoo has unveiled a new dynamic calendar service powered by open source developer Zimbra. Yahoo Calendar offers standard Web 2.0 information-sharing options along with an updated drag-and-drop interface and a handful of unique options. The program is available in beta to Yahoo users as of Wednesday. The release, somewhat ironically, marks Yahoo’s first update to its online calendar system in a decade and follows Google’s Calendar launch by a full two years.

With New Alfresco App, Enterprise Content Management Takes the OSS Road

Alfresco Software announced Thursday the availability of Alfresco Labs version 3, an open source alternative to Microsoft’s enterprise content management software SharePoint. Formerly called “Alfresco Community,” Alfresco Labs 3 offers users the first open source fully compatible SharePoint repository. With Alfresco Labs 3, companies can leverage existing investments in Linux, Java as well as .NET to significantly reduce their SharePoint total cost of ownership and maximize their hardware and software investments, according to Alfresco.

Jumping Into the Software Application Lifecycle Cockpit

In an effort to shine more light on the traditional “dark art” of software development, Borland Software on Monday announced Borland Management Solutions. The three-pronged product leverages Borland’s Open Application Lifecycle Management framework, and is designed to enable users to better orchestrate, measure, predict and improve software delivery. BMS, according to the Austin, Texas, company, plugs into a customer’s existing ALM tooling infrastructure and provides what Borland calls a “cockpit” to give visibility and control over the entire application lifecycle.
