AMD Grits Teeth on Painful Q4 Outlook

Friday, December 5th, 2008

Chipmaker Advanced Micro Devices is among the most recent casualties of the slowdown in technology spending. On Dec. 4 the chipmaker drastically cut its sales outlook, saying fourth-quarter revenue will drop about 25 percent from the third quarter’s $1.59 billion. AMD blamed a cratering in demand for chips used in personal computers and servers, the machines that run corporate networks. The company cited “weaker-than-expected demand across all geographies and businesses, particularly in the consumer market.”

AMD on Monday launched a new line of PCs targeting small and medium-sized businesses. Through its business class initiative, the chipmaker aims to provide desktop solutions to customers stuck between consumer PCs and enterprise-class systems. “Often, SMBs don’t need all the higher level performance [in an enterprise-class PC] that comes with a higher price, but also need something that’s going to be more in terms of reliability and capability than a consumer product would be,” said Ray Boggs, an analyst at IDC.
